Types of Disabilities

There are millions of people worldwide with disabilities, and they are each unique, with their own preferences and abilities. Below, you can find information on deafness, sight impairment, and mobility impairment, but it's important to keep in mind that each individual is unique.

Deafness
People who are deaf or hard of hearing have difficulty hearing or cannot hear at all. Causes of deafness vary from individual to individual; it can be due to disease, genetics, age, or another factor such as noise exposure. Some people who are deaf use American Sign Language or another sign language to communicate, while others do not. In Deaf culture, a capital 'D' in the word "deaf" is used to signify membership in culture, while lowercase "d" or "hard of hearing" refers to the medical condition. "Hearing impaired" is often considered derogatory.

Deaf or hard of hearing people might benefit from captioned or subtitled videos online, translated video into your local sign language, and a decreased reliance on sound on webpages (or a visual notification when a sound occurs).

Mobility Impairment
People with mobility impairments may have difficulty moving their body, moving other objects or interacting with the world around them. They may use a wheelchair, a walker, or nothing at all. Types of mobility impairment range from trembling hands to complete paralysis.

People with mobility impairment may benefit from special keyboards and mice, speech to text software, hot keys or keyboard mapping, and sites that use a low amount of actual physical effort to navigate.

Sight Impairment
People with visual impairment have difficulty seeing because of disease, an injury, a genetic problem. Some people use different terms to break down types of visual impairment - Wikipedia has a good breakdown of these different terms. People with blindness may read Braille, or have a seeing eye dog to assist them, or they may not.

Screen readers are often used to help those with visual difficulty surf the Web. The ability to change text size and zoom in on images is also important.
